Recovery stage 1

The first month of recovery has been tough! From lying horizontally for days to trying to increase my movement more and more, I am determined to be getting those steps up. What motivates me? The incredible young people we support at Care to Dance, who continue to show remarkable resilience and determination throughout their journey.

A bit about me… I am a very active person who cannot sit still. I love to be busy - both at work and with exercising. I love running, powerlifting and of course my passion surrounds the power of dance. As such, this change has been a big shock to the system! I have gone from being exhausted after running a marathon or lifting a heavy deadlift to being exhausted walking up the stairs!

However, over the last few weeks since discharge, I have been adamant that I will recover as quickly as possible. I will be grooving and I will be running soon enough! To help motivate myself, I have set the task to run an ultramarathon within a year of recovery. I have started to embark on this challenge already - just by walking! Every week, I walk a little bit further, I have a few more steps than the week before and although it is hard to stay positive all of the time, I am trying to focus my mental attitude on the goal!

Powerful stories lead inspiration

Our young people continue to inspire me every day. Seeing the community that is built across Care to Dance motivates me to be back in the studio with everyone! I wanted to share an inspirational story of a young person who we support.

A young person started Care to Dance a few years ago and was so anxious about attending and joining in. However, over the course of our programme they started to shine in their confidence, performing solos, duets, building long-lasting relationships with their peers and they also completed their Level 1 and 2 Dance Leadership qualifications! To this day, they continue to attend Care to Dance and support the other young people as an Ambassador. They are an inspirational role model to all of our children and we are so grateful for their energy.

What will the raised money help to achieve?

Your kind donations will enable us to support more young people across the country. We will facilitate more dance classes where young people have opportunities to creatively express themselves and feel a sense of belonging. We will facilitate a greater number of social events and performances for young people to visit different places and to build life-long memories.

“Hello! My name is Cicero. I’m the inclusion lead for Care to Dance, I have been dancing for 4 years since the pilot programme. Dancing makes me feel loose and free and without Care to Dance, I would not have found my passion for it. This is why it’s important that programmes continue to run and develop as care experienced young people, up and down the country, want to experience the same passion as I have. As an Inclusion Lead, I see many young people attend classes and the community both in and out of class that is created. This means that young people are actively supported to make new connections in dance where they might not have made elsewhere.”
